John Muir Award

John Muir Award

The John Muir Award is an internationally recognised award in environmental education. All pupils in Tobermory High School have the opportunity to participate in the first level of the award at “Discovery” level in either S1/2. This is achieved through an outward bound residential trip to Loch Eil and follow-up work in Social Subjects.

Pupils spend time working on the four different aspects of the award: They “Discover” and “Explore” landscapes both familiar and unfamiliar to them, through activities such as Geocaching, hiking and wildlife spotting. They then aim to “Conserve” this landscape and “Share” their experiences of their time being in these wild places. Current conservation activities include working with the forestry ranger in the local park and undertaking a beach clean on a local beach.

John Muir Award

The John Muir award is enjoyed by all participants and allows learners to discover the beauty and diversity of the landscapes on their own doorstep.
