Tobermory High School represents a caring environment and fosters a safe, supportive, purposeful ethos which strives to enable learners to develop confidence and positive relationships based on mutual respect. The school’s programme of study across the curriculum from Early Learning through to S6 helps our children and young people gain the knowledge and skills which lead to healthy lifestyle choices.
In our Primary Department, for example, positive mental health is nurtured through Happy/Sad playtimes recess review emotion wheels and circle time where the children are encouraged to express their feelings and through Cosmic Yoga which introduces them to the principles of mindfulness. Our Kindness Tree allows us to acknowledge and reward individual acts of kindness.
Healthy eating habits are promoted throughout our school from oral hygiene lessons in Primary to our school lunch menu which is designed around providing a balanced diet through home-cooked food and the provision of attractive healthy options.
Learning at Tobermory High School, from 2-18, taking into account the development and maturity of each individual child, will cover areas including:
Physical Education
Food and Health
Positive Self-Esteem
Metacognition
Relationships
Leadership
Teamwork and Collaboration
Social and Life Skills
Substance Misuse
Sexual Health
Parenthood
As a result of our focus on health and wellbeing, our children and young people will be more self-assured and will have a greater awareness of the effect their actions have on others. Learning in and through health and wellbeing will help establish patterns of daily healthy activity which is likely to lead to improved health outcomes in adult life and help them to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society.
“Learning in health and wellbeing ensures that children and young people develop the knowledge and understanding, skills, capabilities and attributes which they need for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing now and in the future.
“Learning through Health and Wellbeing promotes confidence, independent thinking and positive attitudes and dispositions. Because of this it is the responsibility of every teacher to contribute to learning and development in this area. This requires all teachers to ensure they provide all youngsters with the support in order that they can:
make informed decisions in order to improve their mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing
experience challenge and enjoyment
experience positive aspects of healthy living and activity for themselves
apply their mental, emotional, social and physical skills to pursue a healthy lifestyle
make a successful move to the next stage of education or work
establish a pattern of health and wellbeing which will be sustained into adult life, and which will help to promote the health and wellbeing of the next generation of Scottish children.”
