Numeracy

Numeracy at Tobermory High School

At Tobermory High School, we aim to ensure that all of our learners have sufficient skills in numeracy to be able to function in everyday life, work and learning. Our numeracy strategies have a vital role in promoting confidence in the numeracy skills of our young people.

‘All teachers have responsibility for promoting the development of numeracy. With an increased emphasis upon numeracy for all young people, teachers will need to plan to revisit and consolidate numeracy skills throughout schooling.’

Numeracy

The aim of Numeracy Across Learning is to ensure there are positive developments and progression in numeracy for our young people. It is to ensure we have a consistent approach to bridging the gap between pupils who have poor skills and those who excel in numeracy across the school. It is vitally important that we support pupil learning by providing them with strategies in numeracy to apply in various contexts. Learners with specific learning needs will be identified and supported in the development of their numeracy skills in consultation with support staff.

Numeracy is defined as:

‘the confidence and competence in using number which will allow individuals to solve problems, analyse information and make informed decisions based on calculations.’
