Topic
This term, Primary 1/2 have collaborated with Primary 3 to explore our new topic ‘Points of View’. We have decided to focus this topic around the movie Zootopia. Together, we have learned how people’s opinions can be different and to embrace our own unique qualities. We have also had the opportunity to explore different job roles using the characters from the movie.
Show
This Term, the infant department have been working incredibly hard to prepare for our Christmas Nativity. We are very excited to perform the show to our families and friends in school! Look forward to our retelling of a classic Christmas story with a sweet twist!
In term 1, the children have been diving into the fascinating world of the Romans! They’ve explored Roman mosaics and statues, learning how these works of art tell stories from thousands of years ago, and had a go at designing and creating their own Roman mosaic coasters. We have also looked at the incredible engineering behind Roman roads, discovering how these straight, sturdy pathways were built to last. The pupils worked hard to create their own versions of a Roman road using modern day materials. To top it off, the class got hands-on with archaeology, exploring how Roman artefacts are carefully excavated and what these discoveries teach us about life in Roman times.
More recently in term 2, we’ve moved on to exploring Points of View through the lens of predators and prey in the animal kingdom. Using popular stories for inspiration, the children have been thinking creatively about survival, balance and perspective in nature. Alongside all this, the children have been practising hard for the infant Nativity, ‘Bethlehem Bake-Off’, and we can’t wait to share their hard work and festive spirit with you soon!
We competed in the Local Mod in September and were delighted to win first prize in the action song competition with our rendition of Ciamar a tha thu? We were absolutely delighted with the result. This was followed by singing on the beach; where we joined pupils from the other Mull schools to sing two popular Gaelic songs from Mull.
Wildlife of Mull Topic
Learning about the science classification of animals was the focus of our first topic. We studied vertebrates and invertebrates, food webs and habitats.
We made Bug Hotels using plastic bottles and materials we collected in our local environment. We then placed these in the area around the school to support hibernation and species protection.
Our paintings of Mull Birds were entered into the local Horticultural Show where 3 of our class won prizes; a brilliant result.
Outdoor Classroom Day
To celebrate the importance of spending time outdoors in the fresh air, P4/5/6 did a whole day of outside learning on November 7th.
There was fantastic drama in the woods, symmetrical maths and a scavenger hunt in the morning. This was followed by environmental art and poppy sculptures to commemorate Armistice Day. Our Poppies are on display at the school entrance.
Shopping Spree!
To tie in with learning money in maths we created a shop in our classroom. This was very popular and visited by many. Lots of finance and expenses were discussed and calculated. The shop closed with a 50% off sale allowing us to explore another area of numeracy.
We then recycled all the boxes and containers in the shop by designing and building Robots to tie in with our class novel “The Wild Robot”.
Careers Fair
In Primary 6/7 we have had a busy start to the year with several visitors and events. All of the primary 6 and 7s came together to attend the Careers Fair that was set up in the PE hall. They were able to talk to different employers and try out different activities. We even had some winners of Amazon Vouchers which they were very pleased with. It was great to see all the different opportunities for young people available on and around the island.
Rally Visit
The Mull Rally soon zoomed around and the children met two rally divers and go to get behind the wheel of some pretty fast cars (when they were stationary of course)! The children then went on to write some wonderful poems to reflect on the rally and build their excitement.
Place Value Play
To demonstrate their learning and have a little fun along the way the children worked collaboratively to design and deliver their own place value board games. The board games had to include questions that related to all of the skills they had been learning during their place value unit. This included: comparing large numbers using appropriate symbols; partitioning numbers in different ways and representing numbers using different models. It was excellent to showcase their creativity and knowledge. To provide some feedback we invited the rest of P6 to join in the fun and rate the games with some very positive results.
What’s Cooking
To support the Primary 7s in their transition, the children have had the opportunity to explore the delights of the high school’s kitchen. In small groups, they have managed to read recipes, follow instructions and create some lovely treats including, ginger bread, truffles and pancakes which were a particular hit!
